the story is long for how we got here, but basically this is a fork of polymc which is a fork of multimc
multimc was forked largely for the devs refusing official packaging as well as some pull requests being denied for no reason (its a bit deeper than that but yk), polymc was created and was great for a while until the dev went a bit crazy and kicked all maintainers off the project he deemed to be "leftist/liberal", so prismlauncher was created.
currently out of all of them prismlauncher has the most vast feature-set and inclusive community. you can download mods from both modrinth and curseforge, modpacks from many platforms, change your skin/cape, and more.
